Log of Event
On the evening of Sunday, June 13, eleven duelists gathered for the Talon of Redwin Tournament -- a lower ranked, single-elimination tournament, honoring the legacy of Siera Redwin, a legendary Overlord and Baron. The winner of the tournament recieves a dirk carrying Siera Redwin's crest that had been awarded by Siera to her men in a similar tournament and the title of the Duel of Swords' Talon of Redwin for the cycle.
The competitors were seated according to the order in which their entries were received. Since Chase MacLaren's entry was received first, she got the bye. Elmer the frog faced Sumgi in a closely fought match but Sumgi was able to defeat the dueling frog with a 6-5 win. Commoner Soerl found himself matched up against the only Grandmaster in the tournament -- Tareth Thorn. Rank mattered little as Soerl put a stop to Tareth's lunge in the second round and kept the lead for the rest of the match. The young, rising star, Gork, fought U7 for the right to move on into the second round. U7 did not stand much of a chance against the young talent. Gork took a strong 5.5-1 win. Xiao Qiao, also known by ToR fans as Twelve or Jailbait, made her second appearance in the Talon of Redwin Tournament. Unfortunately, her stay this cycle wasn't as long as her stay last cycle but did enhance her reputation as a marathon dueler. Vince Smith stuck with Xiao past five points, eventually grabbing himself a 7-6 win. Matthew Simon found himself facing a box of oranges. The Oranges remained closely matched with Matt until the final two rounds when Matt was able to puncture a good many oranges.
Chase MacLaren joined the action in the second round to face off against Sumgi. Chase brought her game face, reverting back and forth between offensive and defensive moves to keep Sumgi on his toes. In the final rounds she bookended his attacks to take the final point and win. Soerl and Vince Smith ended up in a ring called Real Nice. Soerl's dueling got off to a not so real nice beginning, however. Finding himself down 2-0 by the fourth round, Soerl was forced to battle back from the deficit to take the 5.5-3 win. Matthew Simon moved on to face Gork. Gork took an early lead in the first round by deflecting Matt's lunge. Matt managed to tie up the score in the third round but was never able to take the lead. After nine rounds, Gork emerged with a pass into the semi-finals.
As the earliest entry left in the competition that hadn't recieved a bye yet, Soerl got to take the easy road into the final match. Gork and Chase MacLaren weren't so lucky. Chase's fire hadn't gone out, though. She quickly took the lead by landing a low attack on Gork in the opening minutes of the match. Gork never really managed to settle into the match as Chase pushed through with a series of successful strikes. She stepped away from the match with a 5.5-2 win for a quick drink of water before moving on to meet Soerl in the final match.
At first, Soerl's break seemed to give him the advantage. He lunged in beneath Chase's slower attack for the first point. His advantage ended there. With a series of defensive moves, Chase brought herself back into the game and then landed a handful of vital strikes. She connected low and then immediately moved high in the twelfth round to secure herself a solid 5-1.5 win.
I am honored to name Chase MacLaren the Duel of Swords' second Talon of Redwin.
