His was the face of a carven saint, bleached-bone pale and dark of hair, handsome in the antiquated manner of gothic heroes. The bruise purpling beneath his eyes suggested nocturnal tendencies, and the nacre of his skin something otherworldly; commonly, the unimaginative assumed him kindred. Despite the heroin chic of his pallor, nature had fashioned him too powerfully for him ever to seem weak or slender. He’d an archer’s romantic stature, well suited to the frock coats he favoured (the glass of fashion in his time, and helping not at all to dispel first impressions of leech tendencies) and the staunchly upright, gentleman’s posture.

Vadriel practiced no deceptions, and harboured no malice. The unending patience of his eyes was guileless, and the compassion in his rare and gentle smiles boundless. He was a gentleman as a matter of principle, a man so serene he seemed incapable of ebullience, and yet it did not take shrewd company to observe the immutable melancholy. It clung to him as loyally as a bloodhound to its master, and made friendship hard to come by.
