WRC's Secret Weapon

Post by Maria Graziano »

One could only imagine how a child could survive being raised by Maria Graziano and Bode Bojangles. The first seem to lack even a single maternal bone and the latter appeared to be allergic to responsibility. Yet, Adriana “Adie” Bojangles had finally reached six months and was just beginning to interact with the world in true Graziano style – brazenly and loudly.

Friday morning found Maria with the teething infant on her hip and her opposite arm full of paperwork, moving through the empty halls of Kitsune Stadium. After meeting with the team’s public relations staff, Maria was anxious to get the baby home for her nap. Vendors unpacked boxes of frozen nacho cheese into the concession stands. The janitors were sweeping away the remains of the trash left from the default match the night before. She slowed as she passed the official team apparel shop, listening to the manager bark at the stock boys who were engaged in a fierce nerf bat duel.

Adie had stopped her cranky whine and was giggling in delight at the scene. Tilting her head to the side curiously, Maria stepped forward into the shop. The impromptu duel broke up at the annoyed manager’s insistence and reluctantly the teenagers returned to their work. Without the entertainment, Adie returned to shaking the brightly colored plastic keys in her hand.

The babbling child caught the manager's attention and he offered Maria a quick smile. "Hello, Ms. Graziano, Adie."

Adie reached for one of her Aunt Ria's bobble-head dolls but Maria wisely kept out of the reach of the shelves as she entered the shop. "How is the new Tony stuff Caedia designed selling?"

The manager's smile relaxed into a full grin and he gave several solid nods. "Like hotcakes. The woman is a marketing genius." His grin brightened further as a thought struck him and suddenly he headed behind the counter. "I nearly forgot. Your order came in."

Adie pinged Maria's shoulder with the plastic keys which caused Maria to start bouncing the child on her hip to keep her occupied. "Fantastic. I can send it as a 'get well' present."

He reached under the counter and pulled out a hooded sweatshirt to show to Maria. The front had the words "Wrecking Crew" in an urban font with the look of a spray paint tag. After Maria gave an approving nod and Adie shook her plastic keys his way, the manager turned the hooded sweatshirt around to show the mother-daughter team the back. Above the Wrecking Crew logo -- a wrecking ball destroying a wall -- were the words "Caedia Thorn" and beneath the logo "Secret Weapon".

"Perfect," Maria stated as she stepped forward, placing down her stack of papers to fish in the rear pockets of her jeans for her money. "How much do I owe you?"

The manager folded the sweatshirt back up and placed it down on the counter. "Two hundred and twenty-three nobles."

That caused Maria's dark eyes took look up from the handful of money she had pulled out. "Two hundred and twenty-three. Damn, this is some overpriced crap," she grumbled as she handed over the desired amount.

The manager chuckled as he slipped the hoodie into a navy and black WRC shopping bag and exchanged it for the money. "Nice to see you again, Ms. Graziano. Take care there, Adie." He offered up a little wave to the little girl. However, Adie was too busy to notice the attention as she as reached with both arms towards a lifesize cardboard cut-out of her father wearing the vulgar "Who's Your Daddy?" t-shirt.

Maria slid the bag around her wrist, gathered up the paperwork in her arms, and headed from the store with a departing smile to the manager. With her purchase in hand and Adie beginning to show signs of tears, Maria was in no mood to wait around Kitsune Stadium. A nap for them both seemed to be the best way to spend the afternoon hours.
