The Case of and the subsequent Return of the Missing Pumpkin

Post by G »

One rather calm afternoon, a mostly distracted kender who speaks with a severe lisp came traipsing through the woods, following the directions of the person who gave him a quest of utmost importance. He was desperately attempting to follow through on that quest and finally, after four days of searching, his quest was coming to its conclusion.

Never mind the fact that the quest could have ended a few hours after it began, but kenders being kenders, it became more difficult then a simple case of point A to point B.

We are referring, of course, to the well known factor of the rather short attention span of the race of kender. The moment they see something shiny, they have to investigate. The moment they see an unlocked door, they have to make sure that whoever left it open was doing so intentionally, and thus finding anything loose in the house, they'd have to pocket it in order to return it to the individual because it could get lost easily.

It's the latter reason that caused this kender, one Eucalyptus Griffonmane, to be so terribly late. He started out simply enough, skipping along until he saw someone sleeping on a chair out front of a bank, with a bag at his feet. Well, it was obvious that the bag could get lost, but he didn't want to wake the poor man up who was sleeping. It would be rude to disturb him, so Eukee simply took the bag, which tended to be quite heavy due to the coins inside, and intended to return it as soon as he woke up.

Which, of course, happened right away. Since the gent wasn't really sleeping, just sitting and resting before making a deposit, he was irate. You'd think that he'd be grateful that Eukee decided to keep an eye on all that money, but instead, started yelling for the constable and saying "Thief, Thief!" Eukee figured that someone was a thief and he wanted to do his part, so started yelling "Thief!" too until the constable arrived.

And when he did, boy was he mad. At Eukee of all people. So, he took the kender to the jail, throwing him inside for a day.

The Kender guessed that the constable figured he'd be safe in there, given that he was a witness to such a horrible crime.

But Eukee had a quest, and just couldn't stay behind bars. So, using the kenders birthright(a set of lock picks) he freed himself, left the jail, and proceeded on his way to deliver a package to Elly.

The second day.

Eukee had no trouble escaping from the jail. Well, perhaps "escape" was too harsh a word. He firmly believed that his imprisonment was an accident or for his own protection, being such a valued witness. Eukee didn't feel that he needed protection, however, so he unlocked the cell door with ease(it was an embarrassingly easy lock, it insulted the door to leave it closed) and silently passed the guard on duty. It would have been rude to disturb the poor man, who had been up most of the night with a nasty sneeze. Eukee decided that should the opportunity arise, he would cheerfully bring this guard some medicine. He would thank him for it, especially since he was going to use the guards money pouch to purchase it. After all, it was for the guard and Eukee wasn't very wealthy.

So, outside of the constables building, already a day late into his quest, our little hero actually made it an additional five blocks before being distracted by a glowing sign that advertised "Free Crabs Tomorrow." Well, who would turn down free crabs? Certainly not our shellfish loving little kender. So, he stood outside "Joe's Bait Shop and Restaurant," eagerly awaiting the turn of the day.

That lasted approximately seven minutes. Boredom set in.

So, our Kender friend then went into the Bait and Restaurant to see if they had anything he might be able to afford to snack on. The prison didn't feed him the night before, and he thought the guard would surely not mind if he used some coin to get some lunch, especially since he intended to pay him back. Of course, seeing the pie case didn't exactly keep his mind on payments.

Clearly, these pies were not meant to be left in the case where everyone could see them, and with relative ease lean over and steal them since there was no one present looking after them. So, he leaned over, removed two from the case(He only has two hands, you know) and looked around. Most likely the pies owners were out in front of the store, so he would check there.

Deciding to look further down the road for the restaurant owners, he suddenly heard a commotion in the crowd behind him where someone was again yelling about a thief. So, deciding it would be best if he stayed out of the road again, so he wasn't run over by stampeding feet, he finished off the boysenberry pie reflecting on the though that the town of Rhydin sure had a lot of crime in it, when even pies weren't safe from the criminal element.

Yes, he hoped to wander into the governor one day and voice his concerns over how the city police were failing to keep crime in order around here.

By the time he finished his thought(And the apple pie), it was already dark and he decided it wouldn't be safe to continue his quest to find Elly. Luckily, the parcel was still safe in his backpack.

Day Three.

By now, our little hero had forgotten half of what he was wanting to do, and the half that knew what he was supposed to do conveniently failed to remind him of the Quest he was on. At least he'd made it out of the City and away from the creatures both human and non which provided an unfathomable amount of distraction to the poor Kender.

Such is the way of Eukee's life.

He'd already forgotten the package was in one of his pouches and as he skipped along the dirt path, he began to wonder what the noise coming from the one that held the package was. But, G'nort swore that if Eukee opened the pouch and looked at the package before he reached his destination, G'd find out about it, and turn Eukee into a cricket and swallow him whole.

Thinking about that, Eukee wrinkled his nose. Crickets were disgusting insects that made too much noise. And, it couldn't possibly be tasty. Though he'd heard that most things that looked generally disgusting as an appetizer tasted like chicken, so maybe that's what crickets tasted like. And why was it that so many things tasted like chicken. He heard Frogs legs did, but when he ate some, they most assuredly did not. In fact, they tasted terrible. But if a cricket tasted like Chicken, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Except that he'd be the cricket and G'd be the one eating him.

What a troublesome thought that was. So okay, banishing all thoughts out of his mind, he eventually came to the mountain range where he was told this Elly would be found. G said it was an "Atelier." whatever that was. Eukee didn't know how to pronounce it, let alone know its French origins or what it actually meant. So, he didn't bother to worry about it. "No use worrying over things worrying won't change!" his cousin Rupert always said. Rupert was a nice fellow, up until those Gully dwarves ate him. Poor Rupert.

Anyway, around this time a group of goblins came running out of a cave that was nearby. We would have mentioned the cave sooner, but didn't want to scare you. So be it. Anyway, these five or six goblins came charging out at Eukee for no reason, yelling at him and threatening him with their little swords.

Well, Eukee has fought a lot. He's got a history in the Team Dueling league. He was a squire to a genuine Knight of Solomnia. He had his trusty Hoopak. And Goblins were annoying little runts who really weren't all that threatening. More like easy for experience. How else to practice your fighting skills than beating up a bunch of low level Goblins?

So, attacking him, Eukee made relatively short work of the offensive smelling creatures. After the fifth one fell, Eukee felt the sudden urge to yell "Ding!" and rest, because somehow he knew he'd feel stronger afterwards.

Yes, in a couple of hours he should be on his fourth day, and he was closer to ending his quest than ever before!

Eukee is our Hero!!

Okay! The Fourth day!

Eukee made it through horrible disasters. Plague, locusts, fire, brimstone, Earth breathing dragons, terrifying demons from the sixth level of the abyss, not to mention one really irate woman who was angry that Eukee had saved a hot apple pie from being stolen off her windowsill. The nerve.

Well, all that is true. Except the plague. The locusts... okay, the only thing that was really true was the apple pie incident. But it really was rather unsettling. The woman had a rolling pin, which is a device used to shape and flatten dough. Or inquisitive Kenders.

Now, of course our little hero got away, but in the excitement, the poor young man forgot to take the Apple Pie back. Well, since he'd likely only get beat for the effort, it was obvious that the woman wanted him to have the pie. So he started eating it.

Over hill, over dale, our Kender shall never fail. Face covered in apple pie mess, hankies used up, he was mostly clean by the time he got to the forest of Elly. At any rate, he was full and didn't think that there'd be any further excitement. Not at all. Nope.

But before he arrived....

Well, there were these lovely trees. And on these trees were these lovely fruits. And it seemed like such a shame that these fruits would fall on the ground and no one would benefit from the taste or healthy vitamins they offered, so surely the owner of the orchard would thank him later that he gathered several bags worth of these fruits. Of course, avoiding those dogs and climbing over the barbed wire fences made things a little difficult, and the giant "KEEP OUT" sign was clearly meant for hooligans and riff raff, of which Eukee most certainly was not. So he was definitely doing the farmer a favor.

But alas! He must not be deterred from his course! Stay the Course old man Winters once said. So he went back on his path, forgetting to give the fruit to the orchard owner(which he would certainly remember to take care of on the way back) and made his way, stomach full of apple pie, and pouches full of fruit, breads, and lords know what else he acquired on his way to see Elly.

He finally, after such a loooooong period of time, arrives at the poor womans At.. Atel...thing.. French for Workshop place and knocked on the door.

While waiting for the response, he reached into the super secret, mega magical, uber prized Bag of Holding Gnort once gave to him as a favor specifically for the purpose of running errands which Eukee has simply failed to remember to return(Naturally G doesn't expect to see this article of magic ever returned, but was willing to part with it) and he withdrew a rather large box.

Inside this rather large box was one gently preserved, sleeping, untied Pumpkinhead that goes by the name of Jun.
