“You must despise me now.”

“No.” Lorelei hesitated. “But I don’t think that I trust you anymore either.”

“I suppose I’ll just have to live with that.”

“You seem so morose. You have been acting as though we lost.”

She stared down at her bowl of cereal. The one breakfast food she couldn’t mess up! “Maybe because it feels like we did.” Her hand clenched the spoon. “I have my magic, but what else? Sure, Muirenn is dead. Conventina too. But so is my grandmother. And the kids.” She went back to stirring the soggy cornflakes around, brooding over them. “It’s almost a year to the day.”

“I know.”

“I can’t undo any of it, Merai. I don’t think there is any winning. Life just goes on.”

The knight cleared his throat to alert her to his presence.

Jewell didn’t turn to look at him. She was staring out the window, watching the streets of Little Elfhame and RhyDin beyond, her hand resting on the cool glass. There was tension written in every line of her petite frame. “What did she find?”

“She has tried every different combination she could think of and even those that seemed unlikely. We followed every possible lead.”

“And?”

“We have been unable to find anyone, Mira. There is no one in RhyDin that knows your name.”

A young man knelt before the hastily cobbled together altar to the Divine Mother.

The hum of a ship engine made his prayer impossible to overhear: “We will have our revenge, Mother. I promise you. And then we will cleanse the city.”
