...in Dueling News!!

Welcome to Sunday Last Week!

With the influence of Hydra coming on, we'll be taking Last Week in Dueling News a day at a time. So let's not waste time -- bring on Sunday!

It’s all about the magic and the music, when Arla Carna took the ring for a lively turn against Ranger Gren Blockman. Caller Eden set them to dancing, and it was Gren who made the first sizzling score. Arla made sure she was hard to find the next time around. Arla’s singing must be magic in itself, so watch out for her if you come to face, but it was Gren who worked his own wonders and settled the match with a 5 to 1.5 victory.

Over in the swing of swords -- wooden or otherwise, we have -- a tomahawk! Now that brings back memories, but not the one swinging it. Caller Sadie saw Jane give the sport a go against Lirssa, and while the duelists both started out on the aggressive, they realized pacing themselves was a better plan. Jane sure knows how to handle that tomahawk, catching Lirssa in trap midway and striking the flat of the tomahawk against Lirssa’s shoulder in a swift reminder of being overly eager. Everyone should see their lives flash before their eyes on the mirrored side of a tomahawk. Jane’s skills brought her score to two, but this night, Lirssa finished out the duel with the sought after 5.

You magic fans, don’t worry. There was more on tap that night when Arla and Greenlee took to the sparkling. Greenlee’s spheres were in fine form, though it was Arla that made the first mark with some cringe inducing -- something. Greenlee was quick to shake it off though, and brought her spheres to bear with some high spinning heat. The magic was being made in an exciting exchange throughout, but it was Arla who completed the duel at 5 to 3.

((Hopefully this will get better in time, and not when I'm trying to capture an entire week in one night. Once last week is covered, future episodes should cover a week at a time. Writers are welcome! Want to grab a day to cover the duels? Each duel is to be covered, and as much as possible stick with the facts. Gossip is to be avoided, as there is another effort in the works to cover the colorful side of the sport. Any questions, concerns, or cease and desist orders -- please PM.))

Last week in Dueling News Monday 6.6

Post by News by View »

Last week in dueling…

….on Monday! The Annex was buzzing, blooming, bursting -- give it a shot, and lots of people did, so here we go!

Monday saw us with rising star, often bum smacked, David Harada facing the Empress herself, Jewell Ravenlock in a duel of beat and bludgeon. David got the first hit in by sweeping the Empress off her feet, as noted by Caller Dris. The following exchange brought a lot of pain with fists flying, and Jewell eating away at a lead David gathered at the front half. It came to sudden death twice over until Empress gave David a solid, bloody nose inducing punch after showing off her shoes. 6 to 5.

Kruger “The Anvil” Allen was not to be missed as he met newcomer Max Stone in the rings for a bit of singing and smack-down with Caller Dris. While The Anvil was fast off the mark, like a train-sized bullet, Max took that blow boldly. He did not back down as he brought the match up to tie and pulled ahead. That’s right folks. Pulled ahead of The Anvil -- all the way to a win of 5 to 3. There is something surely to be said about not breaking Stone on an Anvil, but going to leave that to others.

Caller Dris had swords to oversee, too, and this time it was Dimitrii Sixtus and Eden Parker matching icy short swords to short swords. And match they did for the first few rounds, until Eden took the lead with a nice direct approach midway through. Dimitrii used Eden’s aversion to cold to his advantage the rest of the way to a 5 to 2.5 win.

Max Stone was not feeling like being “one and done” with his bouts that night, and faced off against David Harada. Caller Dris must really know how to educate new duelists, because Max was eager for the second run, and David was more than happy to give him some more lessons when he took the lead in score and kept it over the fantastic exchanges of strikes until midpoint when Max claimed the lead for himself. The third quarter changed up the lead again in David’s favor, but Max was keen on seeing a Sudden Death play out to his win of 5 to 4. What a brawl this was, and beautifully executed. Keep both these duelists in your view, readers.

Don’t think the night was saved for the sticks and fists. Caller Dris called a razzle-dazzle magic one for two veterans: Rachael Blackthorne, Archmage, and Vinny! That’s right folks, Vinny was in the house, and he took on that early lead against our current Archmage. A lead he did not let go, though there were mighty spells and enchantments a swirling all over that ring. It was Vinny finishing out with a 5 to 3.5 win.

The final duel that night was Max Stone trying for a hat trick. His choice of opponent? Andrea “Apple” Anderson. Kid’s got guts, so let’s give him his due. Andrea got the first score with a little juke of the legs and throw of a fist. She kept that lead, keeping Max on his toes -- or the mat. That’s not to say he didn’t land a few blows of his own, he did, but in the end it was Andrea with a 5 to 2 win.

Tuesday Magic 6.7

Post by News by View »

Last week in dueling...

... on Tuesday!! This edition is all about the magic. Caller Jesse embraced both reading and seeing Archmage Rachael Blackthorne facing Xanth Van Bokkelen. After Rachael claimed the first score, Xanth kept hard at her heels. Stars, sparkles, and flames were just some of the impressive fireworks as they dueled. Xanth brought the score to a tie, but wasn’t able to twist and toss the magic in just the right way to claim a lead. It was a near match the entire way, bringing them to Sudden Death, but Rachael claimed it in the end with 5 to 4.

Arla Carna was springing to the magical match with Rachael Blackthorne next. This was a sight to see -- what of it that could be seen. Arla was never far behind from the start, and then it was hopscotching to a tie. A tie all the way to the end where they ended the fifteenth round at a mutual 5 points scored. There was arcane beauty in that duel. Let’s hope for more in the future!

Last week in dueling...

...on Wednesday!!

It was reported that some odd issues came up at the Outback on Wednesday (we here at Dueling Newsweek think it must have been the Nexus), keeping Caller Eden practically sequestered on what would have been an epic night of fist fighting. We all sure hope the issue doesn’t repeat itself. Any night without dueling is a tragedy. A tragedy, we say! Be stalwart! Be valiant! Don’t let the Nexus keep you from dueling!

Last week in Dueling News Thursday 6.9

Post by News by View »

Caller Cane had an Empress and Baroness for the first duel of the evening with Jewell Ravenlock swinging her scepter against Baroness Ellisa Morgan. Jewell was on the move a lot in this duel, getting the opening score by getting out of the way. Ellisa tied that score up, but Jewell’s fancy shoes carried her through the rest of the duel to a 5 to 2 win.

Next on Caller Cane’s docket was a switch-it-up fight between Salvador Delahada and David Harada. A quick and nimble switch of grip on the scythe gave David the first point. Salvador nicked --sometimes kicked-- away at that lead, but it wasn’t until late in the match when he took control. Some slick grappling and a wicked thrust got Salvador the win at 5.5 to 3.

Baron Dimitrii Sixtus with his ice blades took on Archmage Rachael Douglas Blackthorne. It was an exciting match between two individuals who really know how to use those weapons. Rachael had the opening point, and both picked an aggressive move to follow up. With all on the board, it became who could hold the lead long enough. First one and then the other, to a double sudden death that ended when Rachael zinged Dimitrii at the last for the 6 to 5 win.

Call bot Sphere called to duty and took on three duels at once, one which was Max Stone and Leena Vincent. Leena got two points right out of the gate. Max was not far behind, though Leena kept a little point cushion of 3.5 to 2 at midpoint. Max kept his cool, catching up for a sudden death he capitalized on. Max took the win at 5.5 to 4.5.

The second match under Sphere’s digital gaze was -- well our reporter swears the board said Tastes Purple, but pretty sure heard her called Lulu. So, Lulu against Bakeneko. Lulu kept the opening thrust at bay. It looked like Bakeneko was using beads of some seriously threatening shapes. There was a lot of drama between the witchling and the feline-ish. Lulu’s use of inflated staff did give Bakeneko’s beads some trouble, keeping the narrow lead to the last few rounds, but Bakeneko finished it out at 5 to 3.5.

The third match was Hope Naharis and David Harada. David’s first strike score was followed up by an exchange the next round, getting Hope on the board. With a few rounds of caution on both sides dotting the match, and Hope managing a hard snap of the pole against David, the rest of the story was David. He prevailed in the scoring coming to a 5 to 2 win.

A fourth duel started up while the other three were whirling along. This one was Addie Alcar and Michi. Michi took to the hard and fast approach, but Addie was having none of it. That first point of hers was answered quickly by Michi in the next round. A later whack to Michi’s head gave Addie the lead once more, and she didn’t give it up until she got a dose of her own first round medicine. In the end, Michi took the win 5.5 to 4.

Last week in Dueling News Friday 6.10 part 1

Post by News by View »

Last week in dueling news…
…on Friday (part 1)!

It was a busy night for Caller Lacey, so we’ll be taking this evening in two parts. Diving right in with the first match – unarmed between effervescent Eden Parker and the guy with the beard – Aric Delevingne, of course. Whether Eden was taking it easy on Aric, as he requested since he isn’t family, or not, what is fact is by midway Aric was at a three point lead. Eden kept his kick away getting her on the board, but Aric’s powers of flirting and fighting took the match 5 to 1.

David Harada and Nuy (it’s all we got) had a fisticuffs match that saw David claiming the opening point. It wasn’t long after that when Nuy kneed David’s gut to tie the match up. After politely checking if David was okay, Nuy tripped David and sent him to the ground. Smooth moves got David back up to throw that wicked jab and tie it all up again. Nuy pulled ahead once more. A lead he didn’t give up, though David did make one more point. In the end, it was Nuy’s win at 5 to 3.

Another solid show from The Anvil this night – against Lirssa al Amat. Both started that show with the spectacle expected. The Anvil used the ropes for extra momentum on his strike, while Lirssa’s blow came down hard on Kruger’s shoulder. Both fighters took a breather after the initial clash. A timely break aside of Lirssa’s kick gave Kruger the next point. Using her body as a speed bump to The Anvil’s full steam ahead, Lirssa tied it up. The tie lingered through the next round as legs locked. It was Lirssa’s wild swing that gave her the brief lead. The Anvil became the Artful Dodger, then used his head to bring us back to a tie. The beauty that is the Krugey Krater sealed Lirssa’s fate and Kruger’s win at 5 to 4.

((We'll be finishing up last week and then that'll be it for Last Week in Dueling News! Thanks for reading!!))

Last Friday part II!

Directly after their unarmed match, David and Nuy took up weapons. They sought the high road, but it was David’s turnabout-is-fair-play that got him the first point. Nuy’s rapier was quick to eat away at the lead with some lightning fast moves. At midpoint, Nuy gained that lead. David kept his scythe busy, but for each strike he landed or kept at bay, Nuy made his own gains. A fantastic duel by both, but only one can take the 5.5 to 4 win this night, and that was Nuy.

Don’t think magic was missed out, dear readers. Eden Parker brought her pink power to duel Archmage Rachael. It was a frightfully good start, and we’re pretty sure a pink toaster oven was seen flying towards Rachael. Rachael’s lead gained in the next round was overrun by pink toast bits soon after. The beauty of the Archmage’s stellar attacks were overcome by toast and snowballs, so it could be she was distracted by an unknown hunger. But the power of pink prevailed in a dazzling 5 to 1.5 win for Eden.

Next up, David decided to take some swings at Aric. They were in synchronicity after Aric’s initial scoring strike, but Aric denied David’s direct endeavor. It was David’s moves that brought him within half a point. That was enough to convince Aric to find more openings. He grew his lead and finished things out with a 5 to 1.5 win.

At the last duel of the evening, Juliane Smith was caught back in action against Hope Naharis. It was good to see her back in the rings, and a grand fight for her return. She snagged the early lead with a fine sweep of her long leg. After a few trades that kept her lead, Hope brought us to a tie with a lovely kick that tagged Juliane’s shoulder. A leg lock took the bout to Sudden Death, where Juliane capitalized for the win, 5 to 4.

Last week in Dueling News Saturday 6.11 part 1

Post by News by View »

Last week in dueling…

...on Saturday!!

Nachos and duelings go together like peanut butter and jelly apparently. Callers Spider, Joker, and Eden were kept busy, so we’ll have another 2 parter for our final installment.

First up on Spider’s calling card: Reiko Souma taking up weapons against Gren Blockman. The opening rounds were all within Reiko’s control. By round 4, Gren out maneuvered Reiko’s defense for a shoulder strike, earning him a place on the board. While Gren’s steady skills got him to tie up the match by round 10, next round saw Reiko ahead once more. She finished up the match with a 5 to 3.5 win.

Not long after Reiko and Gren started up, Spider added Max Stone and Eden Parker to his card for unarmed combat. The first couple of rounds saw a lot of movement, but by the third fists were flying and legs were sweeping -- it worked out in Eden’s favor. After a tie up at 1 for another few rounds later, Eden went on a scoring streak. In the final rounds, Max showed perseverance, eating away at Eden’s lead with some nicely timed dance steps. Still, Eden had her own moves that got her stepping to the win. 5 to 2.

Spider picked up a magical match as well between Trip and Andrea Anderson. To put the term epic in the appropriate context here, four other duels were started and finished in the same time frame. These two duelists certainly gave a great show. Trip claimed the initial lead. With both doing their cleverest tricks, it took getting to round 7 for Andrea to tie it up. Lead then moved to Trip and back to Andrea until tied again by round 12. At the end of 15 rounds, Andrea had a lead, but not the required full point giving us a tie finale. 4.5 to 4.

Filling up the rest of Spider’s calling card were two unarmed matches: Kalamere against Lirssa and Jewell in a dance with Amthy.

At the start, Kalamere used Lirssa’s intentions against her, pulling her aside, diverting the strike, and taking the opening score. After he tripped her up, Lirssa swung and scored. From fist to foot, she tied things up, and then swung again to take the lead. A brief, fleeting lead. It was all Kalamere the rest of the way to his 5 to 3 win.

Jewell and Amthy didn’t play around -- well, they did but it was effective! Between dizzying spins, mutual tickle attacks, and an elegant dip, Jewell danced to a 3 to 1 lead at midpoint. Some swooning saw both ladies in a tangle of giggles on the mat that nearly killed Amthy. She was revived by Jewell who won 5 to 2.

Finishing up Saturday and Last Week in Dueling news!

Caller Joker entertained his matchings when calling armed duels between Aric and Nuy and Rhiannon Harker and Reiko Souma.

In this episode of so turn the blades of our duels, Nuy kept Aric’s opening charge away and claimed first point. After a clashing of weapons, Aric gave Nuy the same treatment, then took the lead on the following round. As both did their best to stab and keep away stab, Aric increased his lead. Nuy got in a well timed strike beneath Aric’s defenses to narrow the margin. Intending to damage his opponent’s ability to move so quickly, Aric kept after Nuy’s lower quarter, taking the duel at 5.5 to 3.

Over in the Rhiannon and Reiko ring -- say that five times fast -- midpoint had Rhiannon at a three point lead. Reiko was done with being on the receiving end and gave her own pointed delivery in Round 4. Another defensive maneuver later on helped Reiko nibble at that lead, but Rhiannon kept going solid to a 5 to 1.5 win.

Not only did Caller Eden supply the fixings for the nachos buffet bar complete with slaughter-your-tastebuds salsa, she called the final duel of the evening between Rena Cronin and Andrea Anderson. Both ladies were in fine form. While Rena sliced open a three point lead, Andrea kept her wits about her, moving and stabbing her way to tie things up. From a mutual 3 points to 4 and the Sudden Death is where Andrea kept the momentum and finished off with a comeback win. 5 to 4.
