Iron Fists League
Season Three

Image
Team Dirty
Captain: Claire Farron
Assistant: Khoom Helston

Team: Zack Alcar, Juliane Smith, Rand alTan, Jewell Ravenlock, Gothrak
2013 Outlook
One thing’s for certain – Claire Farron’s assembled quite the eclectic group of duelers for Team Dirty’s IFL debut. With 6 FlyWeights and a Trainee, Claire must rely on early wins and quick promotions if her team’s going to make a post-season run – which may prove difficult given the only member of her team with IFL experience is Jewell Ravenlock (3-2, 0.00 PDPB all with defunct Roshambo). Outside of IFL, the team does have some unarmed dueling experience with Khoom Helston, Gothrak & Claire ranked Jade and Zack Alcar holding a recently acquired Ruby in the Duel of Fists. Juliane “Jules” Smith’s a total unknown with only her height and weight listed in the team’s media guide.

Although Rand al’Tan (ranked Glass in Duel of Fists) has the most overall dueling experience inside and outside of team competition, Claire appointed Khoom as Assistant Captain. It’s an interesting choice to say the least. Claire and Khoom must strategize matchups as best possible to cater to their teammates’ strengths and they’ll need to work in perfect sync in order to overcome Team Dirty’s season-starting rank deficiencies. If this team gets into a hole early on, it might find itself unable to climb back out.

Team Record
Badside Brawlers 5-2
Top Flight 5-2
Team Fist 5-2
Asian Invasion 4-3
Mercenarii 3-4
Champions of Mythos 3-4
Team Dirty 2-5
The Rock Hards 1-6

Individual Records:
29. Khoom Helston 3-3, -1.17 PDPB
32. Juliane Smith 1-3, -1.50 PDPB
40. Claire Farron 2-4, -2.67 PDPB
43. Zack Alcar 1-4, -3.00 PDPB
51. Jewell Ravenlock 0-2, -5.67 APDPB
52. Gothrak 0-3, -6.67 PDPB

Team Dirty in the Press:

IFL: Three Question Captain Interviews: Team Dirty

IFL: Week 6 Breakdown
Claire Farron's had an inconsistent season, like the rest of her team. Still, she's proven capable of shining ocaissionally, while Jonas Drava has had the misfortune of facing some of the leagues all-time best fighters. This looked like a bit of a mismatch on paper, and Claire proved it with a solid 5-2 win in the Iron Fist match, making her DRT's Team MVP of the Week!

Power Fighters of the Week:
#3 Claire Farron

While Jonas Drava is not an impressive opponent, Claire's strong 5-2 win over him kept Team Dirty's play-off hopes alive this week. If DRT goes on to the play-offs, Claire can proudly look back to that win as the turning point for her team this season. If she had lost, DRT would be out of the play-off race right now.
IFL: Week 6, 4 up, 4 down
4 up:
Claire Farron (Team Dirty, 5-2 Iron Fist win in 6) -- Will wonders never cease? Not only did Claire dominate the Iron Fist bout and start her team's week off with a huge win, she actually spurred Team Dirty to win a match! This likely dooms The Rock Hards to an 0-7 season but I suspect Claire doesn't care. For that matter, neither do I. Is it a coincidence that both of Claire's season wins have come with 5-2 scores? Probably. Again, who cares? DRT's only won 7 bouts this season (3 of them in this match). If they beat MRC in Week 7, they make the playoffs and MRC misses. If they lose, MRC's in and DRT's out. This is as good as it gets folks! Big Money! Big Prizes!! I love it!!!
IFL: Week 5, 4 up, 4 down
4 Down: Team Dirty (0-4 Sweep; 10-34 match loss in 32 rounds) -- Five weeks. Swept three times (including back-to-back in Weeks 4 & 5). Acquired the record for worst-match-loss ever. Ever! Ms. Arky wondered whether Captain Claire's "a stupid confused girl or bumbling angry drunk" who's admitted she has brain damage. Here's the answer: Yes.

Still, not everything''s entirely the fault of her addled brain. Her team's simply wretched. Nobody has a winning record and aside from Juliane Smith (1-1, 1.00 PDPB) who's their #1 fighter, the next best PDPB on the team is a whopping -3.75. In fact, out of the 55 people on the leaderboard as Week 5 closes out, DRT's roster comes in at #26, #38, #39, #43, #47, #50 and #52. Contrast that with AZN who has 4 duelers in the Top 15 or even -- Lord help us all -- Captain Futility & Friends with 4 duelers in the Top 10 (Captain Futility ranks 49th, better than expected). DRT's also finally fallen out of the final playoff spot. That's what happens when a team has 3 bout wins after 20 fights. Two more weeks and this team should be put out of their misery.
In Your Face: Khoom Helston

IFL Playoff Picture
Claire's Dirty crew can't do anything better than 6th place, but that's at least a playoff berth. While there is still a fight remaining in their week 6 match vs The Rock Hards, they do look to have that one wrapped up. As long as Zack can avoid being shutout in 5 rounds against Rachael Douglas in the remaining Anchor bout, they'll improve to 2-4 to match MRC's record. Then week 7 will be the fight to stay alive. On the other hand, if Zack chokes, week 7 won't mean a thing because even if they swept MRC to end in a 2-5 record tie, they can't match the bouts won count.
In Your Face: Claire Farron

IFL Week Five Breakdown
As I've stated with DRT's other sweep-losses, it can be tough to choose a Team MVP when none of them win. However, this week, Zack Alcar went up against Kheldar Drasinia in what looked like the most lopsided bout in the line-up. Zack lost 4-5, which is significantly better than many might have thought him to do against the undefeated pugilist. For what it's worth, Zack is DRT's Team MVP of the Week!
IFL Week Four, 4 Up, 4 Down
Four Down: Team Dirty (0-4 Sweep; 6-34 match loss in 27 rounds) -- Technically, this is the worst matchup loss ever in IFL history. Though the point-spread mirrors Team SHE's buggered performance against the Badside Brawlers in Season 2 Week 4, those girls dragged the match out to 31 rounds. The Dirty crew actually managed to lose faster. Gothrak (down 4-0 in 5 rounds), Claire and Khoom scored a combined total of three points (Iron Fist, Push & Crutch) while rookie Juliane Smith did 3x better by scoring a whole three points in her Anchor loss. And yet, this team still might find themselves in the playoffs. What a load of bollocks.
IFL Spotlight on Team Dirty

In Your Face: Jewell Ravenlock

IFL Week Three Breakdown
Going into this week, Vincent Smith was fighting like he belonged in the conversation for League MVP, giving up only three points in two duels. Claire Farron, known best for her current holding of the title of Archmage on Twilight Isle, shocked TOP in the Push Match by delivering a 5-2 pounding to the veteran. Not only is this the Upset of the Week, Claire's performance also earns her my nod for Team MVP of the Week.

Power Fighters of the Week:
#2 Claire Farron

Our next two most notable performances this week come from two big upsets. Claire Farron is a young captain, who proved that her team can compete outside of Twilight Isle this past Hydra season. She kept her team's play-off hopes alive this week with an extremely impressive 5-2 win over Vincent Smith this week, after he'd looked almost untouchable in his first two bouts of the season. What's more? Her win provided Team Dirty with enough points to upset Top Flight, a number of peoples' pre-season pick to take home the IFL crown this year. That's some good fighting!
IFL Week Two, 4 Up, 4 Down
4 Down:Team Dirty (0-4 Sweep; 11-34 loss in 43 rounds): Team Dirty may take solace in the fact that this by no means was the worst sweep loss in league history. That honor's reserved for the ladies of Team SHE who set the record for uselessness with their 6-34, 31 round loss to the Badside Brawlers during Season 2, Week 4. Unfortunately for Team Dirty, a sweep loss is a sweep loss and to make matters worse, nobody from the field of Zack Alcar, Gothrak, Khoom Helston or Captain Claire Farron were even in a Sudden Death scenario. Dominated from start to finish, Team Dirty received a raw lesson in just how far they have to go to become competitive at the hands of Champions of Mythos (who happen to know what it's like to get swept out of the League Finals).
IFL Week One Breakdown
That said, not everything is bad here for their first outing. Khoom Helston took down up-and-comer, Morgan Chae, in a brutal overtime victory that would be Dirty's only win of the week. That makes Khoom the obvious Team MVP of the Week. That said, besides Jewell's big loss to Kimone Kidd in the undercard Crutch bout, Dirty kept the rest of their matches very close -- and Week One could have very easily gone another way.
Hydra: Challenger Central with Chun-li
Monday Highlights

1: Payback is a.. Watch your tongue! Claire was the Queen of Shut-Out's last week, but the start of Week 3 had her losing her crown to a girl named.. Queen. Well, isn't that poetic. 5-0 in 5 rounds. Queen may not be apart of a Hydra Team, but hopefully she raised a few eyebrows. Coaches should try and grab Little Miss Royalty up as soon as possible! This is only the first day of Week Three so I'm hoping to see many more Shut Outs!
Hydra: The Shiranui Special
The 5-0 Domination

So many this week! Fighters are stepping up their game to get those points! Even if Swords was the preferred sport of Week 2, we saw many Shut Outs in Fists and Magic as well.

The Shut Out Award goes to... Claire Farron! 5-0'ing Aja Bird, UltraV, and Ray Bradford!

The "Better Luck Next Week" Award goes to.. Khoom! After getting shut out three times in Week 2 of Hydra.. maybe his luck will take a turn for the better in Week 3?

IFL Season 4 Team Dirty News:

That's the way the cookie crumbles...

Code: Select all

Team Dirty also returns but have shaken up the lineup enough that you might mistake them for some other team if it wasn't for the Captain and some other notable characters, because Khoom is quite the character, and I say that with love. Perhaps the most notable changes are the acquisitions of Shadow and Hope, as the two highest ranks on the team Claire made some smart decisions in filling the ranks of the duelers lost. I suspect this will translate into being the most improved team this season.
IFL 2014 Preseason Power Rankings by Jack Smith

Code: Select all

5) TEAM DIRTY (0-0) The core of Claire's team returns (Zack and Khoom), but she has upgraded her roster with the current Diamond, Hope, and Sapphires Shadow and Rick Spade. Hope brought her mentee, Sandy along with her. Dirty came within a duel of making the playoffs last year, and I like the offseason moves she made to make a play for 2014. I definitely think they're playoff material, but it will depend on the depth of their roster on how far into the playoffs they can go. If Rick and Shadow can turn in solid performances, watch out.
IFL Week One Rankings

Code: Select all

7) (5) TEAM DIRTY (0-1) I didn't see that one coming. Claire put up a fight in the Iron Fist, but they end up losing three out of four matches. Zack did get a big win against Jewell, but nothing much else to report. In their defense, Hope, Shadow, and Rick weren't fighting this week. They'll have to step it up against Team Fist next week, because they don't want to fall too far behind the pack.
The Blow of the Week

Code: Select all

Team Dirty vs. Royal Pain

I was at the first duel for the 2014 season between Claire of Team Dirty, and Jenai of Royal Pain. Going in I was convinced that I would pick the initial blooding in that duel as my blow of the week. I had, in my excitement for the beginning of the season, romantic ideas of calling it the shot heard round the league. I was prepared to stand up when Claire's opening kick sped in faster than Jenai's and just begin writing this piece. Something stopped me. It could have been the defiant answering punch that Jenai fed to Claire. You know, the one that had everyone glued to their seats in round two? Sure this is where Jenai tied it up, and the duel became a seesaw match between the ladies of the IFL. I could say that this was the perfect blow of the fight, it told everyone that they need to pay attention. As good as both of those shots were, there was an even better one. Yes Claire came back and took the lead from Jenai. Yes Jenai managed to hold off Claire's match point for the following two rounds. And it is just as true that in round 9 Jenai brought the match to sudden death. All amazing shots, no question about it. There will be those who believe that the final round, a nice little jump kick from Jenai that secured her the upset, was the most important blow of the fight. That is not my opinion.

What is the perfect fight? An argument can be made for shutouts being perfect, and perfect shutouts five points scored in five rounds being epic. The perfect bout to me turns out to be one that works along the lines of the fight between Claire Farron and Jenai Ravenlock. Why? Because the lead changed twice, because the score tied three times, and finally because in round 10 these two ladies laid the hurt on one another to raise the score to five all. For me it no longer mattered who won the fight. Whatever else happened, the victor could only score the points for the weight of the bout. The loser had earned their team the most possible points for a loss. Despite what many of you may believe when you see me in the ring, I am not crazy, at least not about this. Round ten's double impact marks the pivotal moment in this fight. In fact, I'm going all Anvil on your asses. Since we have The Keeper of Earth and a Fire Elemental, I'm naming Round Ten The GeoThermal Event!
IFL Week Two Rankings

Code: Select all

4) (7) TEAM DIRTY (1-1) Team Dirty rebounds from a rough start to defeat Team Fist 3 duels to 1. YOUR Diamond, Hope, makes her first appearance and gets the win in the Iron Fist against Andrea. Shadow and Rick contribute victories, and show just how much potential this team has. This will be an interesting an exciting match against the Rock Hards this week.
Four Up Four Down Week One

Claire received an astonishing seven mentions throughout the article but we'll highlight just one item:

Code: Select all

Zack Alcar (Team Dirty, 5-1 Crutch win in 7) -- It seems unlikely that Mr. Alcar, who went 1-4, -3.00 PDPB in Season 3, was the only reason his team didn't suffer a match sweep loss. This bout was the 2nd of the overall match and Zack's convincing victory actually made it look like his team had a shot to win the week. Then the others dueled and Zack's fifteen minutes of fame were over. Keep putting in the tape of this bout, kid...it may be the only glory day you have.
