RhyDin High School: a RhyDin AU

Post by The Principal »

Welcome to Red Dragon High! It’s April, which means it’s the start of the new school year. RDHS is a prestigious school in the Dragon’s Gate district, known for its propensity for educating future duel champions, its student-centered administration, and its history as old as the City itself. Students are given a broad curriculum centered on Mathematics, Literature, Magical Studies, Social Sciences and Arts from across the Nexus, and a physical education program sponsored by the Dueling Leagues of RhyDin.

Student life involves a variety of after school clubs and an on campus for story for those whose families live out of town and can’t commute. The Student Council is the primary governing body for students, while a teacher’s association headed by the illusive Principal administers the school as a whole.

Welcome, new and returning students! May you learn and grow into the generation that will brighten RhyDin’s future!

Clubs and Student Associations at RDHS

Student Council
This is the body responsible for administering the other clubs and planning school wide events for the year. Each class is headed by a Class Representative chosen by the students. These Class Reps elect a Class President for each year and a Student Council President for the year is elected by the student body at large. Also meets once a month in a larger council made up of the presidents of each club in addition to the student council itself, mostly for allocation of budget and planning school wide activities.

Student Dueling Association
This club is further divided into the three traditional Swords, Magic, and Fists clubs, each headed by a president. The Association is headed by the three presidents. The Fueling Association is unique in that students are allowed to be a member of both a Dueling Club and another student club, including the Student Council. Presidents are chosen by a tournament held during the first term in May.

Sports Clubs
Clubs for other sports including Baseball, Association Football, Tennis, Swimming, and Track and Field. The Chess Club is also included by long tradition.

Arts Clubs
Includes Drama Club, Home Ec Club, Fine Arts Club, the Literature Club, and an ever changing list of smaller art clubs as interest waxes and wanes in various specialized art fields.

Music Clubs
Included the Marching Band, the Concert Band, and the Jazz Band. Membership in Marching Band and Concert Band usually overlap and is headed by the same faculty advisor, who acts as conductor.

Occult Club
An off shoot of the Magical Studies. No one knows how the club President is selected, or even who the President is in a given year. Usually present for the Culture Festival but otherwise left alone by the larger student body.

Other clubs may be formed by a group of a minimum of four students pending an approved application submitted to the Student Council.

Ask any alumnus in The Nexus and they will tell you they remember The Principal. In all that time, he has been a constant on campus.

Rarely seen except at ceremonies or assemblies, the Principal is content to leave most day to to day operations and administration to the Faculty and the Student Council. Standing at an imposing height by any standard, he is seen at all times in his signature tailored tan suit, white shirt, and lapel pin featuring the crest of the Red Dragon.

He has a reputation for being stern, but fair, and often jovial when approached in public. The few who have been called into his office, however, refuse to discuss the experience, but inevitably returns a new person, even if only temporarily. None enter this Sanctus Sanctorum of the High School unless invited.

Roughly three hundred years ago, there was a student named James Zeal. He lived alone, had few friends, worked hard for three years, and graduated shortly before leaving the City and presumably living out the rest of his life in some corner of the Nexus, much as anyone else would.

This is what James Adia, a teacher of thee years at Red Dragon High, found while browsing the archives in the school library, still managed by the old librarian Ëarendil.

James smiled faintly before placing the old yearbook back on the shelf where he’d found it. He turned and left the space that seemed way to big for the corner of the school it resided, running his fingers through the dark hair longer than was considered professional for a teacher. He entered the Faculty Workroom and, mumbling a few polite greetings, sat at his desk to put the finishing touches on his prep work for the school year. He’d be home room teacher for Class 1-3 this year, in addition to his usual rotation in the Magic and History departments.

Two days left to get things ready. If only he weren’t a procrastinator. Oh well. It couldn’t be helped.

Lunch box. School bag and books. Uniform. It felt like Wylinna Newhaven had remembered everything. Except the time. It was already 7:56, so she had half an hour to get from her house Old Market to the Red Dragon High School, halfway across Dragon’s Gate.

“Uncle! I’m heading out!” She rushed out the door, barely hearing her guardian calling back from behind her. She had bees excited to be accepted into the Red Dragon at the end of last term. Her dad hadn’t been thrilled to see his little girl off to the city, but mom had talked him down and even called her brother, Linna’s uncle, about boarding her instead of sending her to the dorms.

A compromise for dad’s sake. He may not really like Uncle Shiro, but he figured it was better than a bunch of boys in a dorm, no matter the “supposed security those damned city folk think they got going.”

Linna cringed just a little as she rushed through the city. She was sure there wasn’t enough time to get a cab, and she wondered why a city as busy as RhyDin didn’t have more public transit. Something to do with the ease of teleportation thanks to the Nexus. Which wouldn’t be a problem if she were licensed to port inside the walls. It did her no good now.

She rushed in the front gates with less than ten minutes remaining. Straight in the main entrance and... oh hells which was her locker again? She bounced on her feet as she clumsily fetched her handbook from her bag. Rushing to the correct number, she swapped her shoes and stuffed away her lunchbox before rushing once again up to the third floor and down the hall.

She looked at the signs hanging above the doors until she found 1-3, her classroom. She made it! She was just in time! She opened the door and...

Everyone was in their seats, staring at her. The teacher, a youngish man with longish dark hair and violet eyes, also glared at her with an indifferent-ish look.

“Ahh, miss Newhaven. Pleased to see you’ve decided to join us. We were just finishing our seating arrangements. I’ll assume you’ll be okay in the fourth row, next to the window? Right in front of Mister Jeong. If not, you’ll have another chance at VIP seating next term.” He looked back down to the papers on his lectern with amused dismissal.

“Um, yes, sir. Excuse me.” Her face felt bright enough to light the room on its own. She made her way across to her seat, right in front of a sad-looking boy staring out the window. The only one who didn’t stare at her entrance, in fact. She barely noticed him. The whispering and giggling around Linna drew her attention fully in on itself.

She glanced at her wristwatch. The cat face staring back at her reported it was 8:32. As she sat, she looked at the clock on the wall, and nearly froze. It said 8:42. Before hanging her bag from the hook at the side of the desk, she checked the clock on her phone, stuck silently in the side pocket. 8:42.

She wasn’t sure how much embarrassment one could handle before death, but Linna was certain she was nearing that point. She vowed to never again trust a cat, no matter how cute it was. In the back of her mind, she knew that wouldn’t last the day.

“Entrance ceremony is on Monday, and the Principal will have plenty to say then. I’m not going to waste your time with a speech you won’t even remember next weekend.” He moved along the front row, handing small stacks of paper to the students at the front. “This is your class schedule for the first term and the info for class 1-3. I’m James Adia, and I’ll be your home room teacher this year, as well as your history teacher in first period. I won’t be teaching the freshmen in magic this year, but I am still coaching the junior level Duel of Magic club. I’m sure I’ll see some of you there.”

The stack of papers made it to Linna as he circled the class, continuing to talk. She took her copy, a set of five stapled pages, and turned to pass the last stack to the boy behind her. “Your lunch will be at third lunch period, 1PM each day. I recommend bringing your lunch whenever you see The Stew on the menu. You’ll thank me.”

The schedule was straightforward enough. History, maths, and literature in the classroom, followed by PhysEd in the gymnasium right before lunch. Convenient, since she brought her lunch, that meant she could take a shower before eating. Then magic fundamentals, and...

POP!

A loud bang went off behind her, along with the smell of smoke. Linna turned to see the boy patting at the burning notebook on his desk, and a strange girl sitting next to him laughing hysterically. Mr. Adia walked up behind the girl and brought a small book down on her head with a thwack.

“Mister Jeong, if you’re so eager to blow things up in my class, I suggest seeing me at the dueling club after school tomorrow. Until then, please don’t burn the school down.”

“Yessir, it was an accident, won’t happen again.” The boy sheepishly attempted to clean the charred mess on his desk. There were a few giggles around the room, and the girl who had been laughing was holding her hand over her mouth, clearly enjoying the spectacle.

Linna turned back to her desk and shoved the syllabus into her bag. For her part, she was just glad she wasn’t the only one to get embarrassed on the first day. As the history lecture began, she began doodling in the margin of her notebook, making sure to not set off any of her own runes accidentally. Mister Adia outlined what to expect for the next term in history class, and Linna nearly forgot about the sad boy behind her, sonething he wouldn’t have complained about.
